DISCUSSION ON FINANCES
(notes by Tree)
So far it’s been really informal, and expenses overall have been kept quite low and covered by a few committed individuals. Future may look different, with a big printing bill if we self-publish and potential expenses for promotion (e.g. sending people to conferences) and fulfillment. Will probably need some organizational form (legal entity) for money to come in and out, so that’s not an individual tax responsibility. This will probably require regular reporting to some government agency. We want to maintain our sense of being a volunteer-oriented collective effort; none of us are in this primarily for personal financial gain. We occasionally choose to pay someone for specific labours. We want to operate in a manner that reflects our values and core beliefs, including a basic spirit of gifting to the commons.
Do we need to incorporate? If so, what corporate form is the right fit for us? Where do we want to charter? What is the minimal organizational structure we need to handle promotion and distribution? Further research needed.
Jim will look into organizational forms in Oregon, Sue in Washington. Get further information for us to evaluate trade-offs. They will report back by July 10.
