    Heart

Light is a fundamental element that has both physical and spiritual attributes and meaning. Physically and metaphorically, light makes things visible - illuminating and manifestating in a variety of ways.

    Description

As a pattern in group process, we're focusing on the physical use of light in creating a container.

    Instructions:

In general, and especially for working groups that have results to produce, it is important to find a meeting location with plenty of light. Natural light adds a particular freshness and vitality, but a similar effect can be achieved with careful use and placement of artificial light.

Meeting outdoors in full or particially shaded light may be effective in situations where you want to stimulate a connection with nature, whether internal or external.

Candlelight can be very effective in creating a sense of intimacy and thoughtfulness, bringing beauty into the space, and helping in the physical & psychological process of creating a container.

When the intent for the gathering is more internal, drawing on imagination or "dreaming", it is sometimes more effective to use diffused or lower light levels in the room. Kivas, or Native American "Dreaming" ceremonies, for example, take place in total darkness so that the light is all internal.

    Cautions & Caveats:

Light is a powerful influence on people's psyches and care needs to be taken in applying this pattern, being sure that the light is appropriate for the situation. For example, many people are afraid of the dark, and may become anxious in low light situations.
