1 to 20 of 21Timeline & Plan
August 4, 2010 (well really from July 21, just now getting posted here): This project now has a timeline! The plan is as follows:
- Now thru Sept. 27: Get the remaining patterns into rough draft form by the time our next in-person session starts in BC (Sept. 28-Oct. 1)
- Sept. 28 thru following BC session in January: Polish and edit, refine, source visuals, etc.
- January thru June 2011: Book proposal and further development of other ways of getting this out into the world (card deck and more)
- By June 30, 2011: Book proposal complete and in the hands of a publisher.
July 2010 session on Bowen Island
July 20, 2010: A group of 8 is gathered on Bowen in BC, look here for who's attending, what patterns are being worked on, what we're talking about, photos, and more.
Map Now Shows ALL Relationships!
July 8 session in Portland
June 30, 2010: A group of us will be meeting on Thursday, July 8 all afternoon to write patterns together at Daybreak Cohousing in Portland, OR. Attendees so far include: Ted Ernst (our host), brush, Theodor Arnason, Richard Burg, Karen Hixson, and Tree Bressen. Wanna come? Contact Tree for more info.
Map Improvements Underway
1. The patterns on the map are now color-coded by stage of completion. So Bloom patterns are yellow, Sprouts are green, Seeds are blue, and patterns that have been referred to by another pattern but not yet created are grey.
2. Each pattern card now includes a mini-map showing that pattern plus two levels of relationship out from it. (Click on the map link to open the card, below "related patterns" and above "resources.")
3. Vine is also working on a way to show all the relationships among patterns on the map, instead of only some. You can see his initial attempt by going to http://grouppatternlanguage.org/special/layout_map.html and clicking on the Start button at the bottom of the window. Next Pattern Review Call is May 26
Some of the folks who attended the Bowen session are having phone calls to follow up with moving patterns from draft to polished form. Anyone is welcome to join one of these calls, see the Pattern Review Calls page for more specifics.

Bowen Island writing session
April 16-18, 2010. We are doing a weekend writing session at the home of Dave Pollard, beautiful location a short ferry ride from Vancouver, BC. Other people attending are: Sue Woehrlin, Daniel Lindenberger, Dawn Smith, and Carol MacKinnon. So far we've written about a dozen new patterns, i am psyched! Cheers, --Tree.
A very productive gathering! See the report and photos.
Seattle pattern session April 15-16
A few of us are meeting in Seattle before the Bowen Island session, Thursday April 15 ~4-10pm and Friday April 16 ~9am-12pm. Mostly we'll be at Sue Woehrlin's house, plus Thursday dinner probably at Nettletown. Attendees so far for different parts are Peggy Holman, Christy Lee-Engel, and of course our stalwart host Sue Woehrlin. Contact Tree for more info.
We're on the NCDD blog
Pleased to announce that we are newly posted onto the blog of National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation, you can see it on their homepage at http://thataway.org, or its long-term home at http://www.thataway.org/?p=2483. Cheers, --Tree
How far along is a pattern?
Announcing the Map!
Thanks to Vine, the visual mapping feature that i've been salivating about now really exists! Go to Full Map to see a picture of all the patterns and how they relate. If you click on one, it moves to the center, and you see all patterns two links out (that is, two degrees of separation). When you write or edit a pattern, all you have to do is fill out the Related Patterns section and whatever you are pointing too is automatically added to the map. Too cool, huh?! --Tree
Experimental profile field
[This change was undone, and the conversation continues mostly on What we mean by "pattern". See the discussion here for more about what happened and people's perspectives on it.]
I just added a field to the User Card offering everybody the opportunity (if you feel so inclined) to write a bit about the distinction ...
Session in Progress in Berkeley
We've had 16 people pass through already today, in our pattern writing session. I'm psyched! Two patterns have been written by individuals already familiar with the project, while a third is in progress collectively using a laptop projector (thanks Raines)! It's been a fascinating mix of people here for short and long times, people we knew were coming and others we didn't even know had any connection here, but overall the flow-through is working. Cheers, --Tree
Really happy so many new people showed up, and with the connections being made and work being done. --Brandon WilliamsCraig
See a report from near the end of day 2 by Tree here.
How to get email about changes
To get email about changes to something you're looking at, hover your mouse over the gray bar at the bottom of the card and click on the "watch" link that will appear in the right corner.
You can also choose to watch all cards of a given type. For example, if you want to get email whenever any pattern is edited, go to Patterns and go to the gray bar and click on "watch Pattern cards". You could do the same thing with Users.

Bay Area pattern session Feb. 7-8, 2010
Live in California, or want to visit? Some of us are meeting up in person for two days to write patterns together. Participants are expected to already be familiar with the project (having read the intro documents on the website, at least) and ready to roll, contact Tree for more info. We'll be meeting in the East Bay at Epworth United Methodist Church. Hope to see ya there!
Pattern Languages conference in Portland
Hey folks, how often does a conference on this subject happen? Not very often! This weekend's event in Portland will have 5 of the 6 authors of the original Pattern Language present (everyone except Christopher Alexander), along with Ward Cunningham, Stuart Cowan, Doug Schuler, and others involved with a variety of pattern language efforts. Tree is going for networking and inspiration. See you there? http://puarl.uoregon.edu/docs/images/Fall%20Symposium%202009.pdf
Events Page Added
There is now an Events page where you are encouraged to post announcements for conferences and gatherings where you think pattern language-interested participants might be present. The idea is to support us linking up in person at events of common interest.
Open Community-Building Calls
Kaliya Hamlin is convening a series of conference calls every 2 weeks for folks to talk over the pattern language and to cooperate in writing more patterns. Open calls will be held Aug. 6 & 20, Sept. 3 & 17. See calls page for more info and to RSVP.
New page for inspirational quotes
See Quotes and wisdom for cross-postings from other lists, quotations that inspire you in this work, and more.
