    Back of cards discussion notes

    core beliefs discussion notes

    Publication and research next steps

Worked out image assigning and voting process

    Lots of image progress

    REPORT

Full-time attendees were:   Tree Bressen, Ted Ernst, Sue Woehrlin, Dave Pollard.  Part-time attendees were John Abbe, Jim Newcomer, Mark Dilley.

Images:  Added more images, and vetted the ones that were there.  The images have now been separated into 3 "buckets":  1. ready, we like it (7 patterns); 2. good enough if necessary (50 patterns); 3. need something better (33 patterns).  As of this writing we have at least good enough images for nearly 2/3 of the patterns, which is great.  This is a major accomplishment and there is still significant work to be done.  You can view the Image Progress page at http://grouppatternlanguage.org/wagn/Image_progress.

Core Beliefs:  We had a good discussion on what the core beliefs of the project are, a statement on which will be included in the publication booklet and on the website.  We plan to have 1-2 more conversations about this by phone and then draft 3-7 specific points.  If you want to join the call it will be held Thursday, May 19 at 2-4pm PT, please contact Dave at <dave.pollard@gmail.com> and read the notes posted at http://grouppatternlanguage.org/wagn/core_beliefs_discussion_notes_April_2011

Activity Run:  On the evening when a few extra people came, we handed out the cards for one category to each of 9 people.  Then Ted told a story of an upcoming meeting, and each of us picked 3 cards from our category that we thought applied.  We posted them on a chart that had 4 stages in time, and talked about when and how they would apply.  This went very well and seemed helpful to Ted in preparing for his session.

Publication Plans:  We confirmed that we plan to release the card deck for free as a PDF, while also setting up a system where people who are willing to pay in exchange for a high-quality, well-printed card deck with booklet and box have an easy way to do so.  Our license will probably be CC-BY-SA 3.0.  We met with Paul Cienfuegos of 100fires.com here in Portland who does professional fulfillment for a variety of independent producers and may serve as our fulfillment center if we self-publish.  We brainstormed titles for what we might call the deck when released.  It would be really good if we could qualify for media mail so we are researching to see if this is possible.

Graphic Design:  We met with graphic designer Nuriya Janss to get some basic advice on design of our deck and on what to look for in potentially hiring a designer.  We each brought decks for others to see, to get ideas on what kind of look we want.  We particularly like the packaging on a series of decks from Chronicle.  We brainstormed ideas for the back of the deck.  We have 3-4 graphic design needs (1. card layout; 2. art on back; 3. booklet layout; 4. packaging) that could be handled all by one person or parceled out.  Tree now has contact info for some designers and Ted is going to do a first round of checking them out.

Work Plan Check-in:  Still aiming to publish this fall--ambitious but achievable.
