[after reviewing the various types of 'suspension' that can help group process (see list below) I have concluded there is not enough to this pattern beyond what is included in Witnessing Without Judgement and Openness Toward Outcome, to warrant listing it as a separate pattern; I have hence moved it to the boneyard and altered the links to it from other patterns. -- Dave Pollard October 12/2010

    Description

Things that can be suspended (halted for a time) in the interest of keeping the field open to whatever might emerge:

    • preconceptions, and jumping to conclusions (1)
    • the first thoughts that come to mind (2)
    • expectations (1)
    • judgements, and specifically 'disbelief' or skepticism about what is being said (2)
    • a process (e.g. when it's not working, or when it becomes overwrought) (4)
    • distractions (3)
    • decisions (5)

In music, suspension is a prolongation prior to a resolution, commonly used just before the end of the last verse or chorus in a song. Like other uses of the term it suggests 'keeping you(rself) hanging", as in the related term 'suspense'.(3)

How these 'suspensions' are covered off by other patterns:

    (1) these seem to be covered off by Openness to Outcome

    (2) these seem to be covered off by Witnessing Without Judgement

    (3) this seems to be covered off by Holding the Space

    (4) this seems to be covered off by Improvisation and other patterns

    (5) this seems to be covered off by Divergence and Convergence Rhythm

Conclusion: there isn't enough here to warrant it being a separate pattern. As one of those wanting to see it developed, I now recommend it be moved to the boneyard (Dave)

    Cautions & Caveats:
Would we ever not want to suspend judgment?
Is there a possibility of suspending for too long?

It’s important to know when and how to bring meaningful constraints, practicalities and limitations of available resources back into the conversation.
