More than a decade ago, i realized that in group facilitation i had found my calling, in Marge Piercy's sense of that word: "where your passion meets the world's crying need." I feel blessed to do work in the world that helps people, meets my values, calls for creativity, pays decently, requires me to bring my best self forward, and offers incredible autonomy and freedom. I conduct my practice on a gift economy basis.
I am presently taking a sabbatical of approximately one year, with this pattern language project being a main focus during that period. For me personally this project is:
- a means to "scale up" the impact of facilitation beyond those who i touch going from group to group;
- an opportunity to distill and integrate what i have learned over time;
- a way to connect with colleagues new and old who i respect and care for.
Thank you for joining in this work!

How have you seen or used patterns of group dynamics?
The book Art of Facilitation on p. 33 has a checklist of questions to ask yourself before agreeing to facilitate for a particular group. The last question on the list is, "Am I the only person who will work well with this group?" They say that if the answer is yes, then you should strongly consider declining, because your ego may be too wrapped up in it to do a good job. A classic version of why having a Personal Practice is so important!
