Proposed or new since last round of decision at Bowen, to be reviewed by group: Additions, Renamings, Mergers, Removals to Boneyard
Whenever we make changes, let's make sure to check related patterns and update them as necessary.
ADDITIONS?
Do we need something specifically on People Feeling Heard or Listening? from Tom
- or rename/merge Witnessing Without Judgement into it, or better yet, into Empathy - John
Bring back Go Meta (it became Helicopter then Seeing the Forest, Seeing the Trees, and lost the focus of shift from content to process). - John
Non-duality (or Transcend and Include) is a deep theme in the cards, perhaps deserving its own pattern.
Similarly, Trust could be a pattern.
Preparedness - Includes contracting (which may even deserve it's own pattern), advance research, planting seeds, getting people to the table, etc. - John Abbe
Gathering Facts - John
FROM LARRY PENNINGS:
I still notice a wish for a few more patterns that support group movement toward convergence and making decision/taking action.
Some possible examples I thought of include:
(1) Noticing Common Threads
(2) Synthesizing
(3) Summarizing - Does Mirroring cover it at all? -John
(4) Capacity to distinguish between self and group, able to maintain self identify and allow the group as a whole to reach a conclusion that is different from/more than/less than the place the individual is. Relationship of group and self? - John Appropriate boundaries relates to this, perhaps whatever he's proposed would supercede it - Tree
When I think about the Spirit and Magic cards, I'm moved to think name an additional pattern that I believe is the prelude or opens the way for these to show up. In the context of my work with the Foundation for Community Encouragement (M.S. Peck's Community Building process) it was called "Emptiness). I see something similar described in the "letting go" at the bottom of the U in U-theory described in Senge et. al.'s book and Scharmer's U-Theory. In my thinking about spirituality of groups, I think this moment of letting go/dying/emptying is generally what disposes a group for the emergence of spirit/magic. While, as the cards indicate, one can't control when magic shows up, I think it is possible (though not common) to cultivate a discipline of emptying which increases the odds that it might.
I like this. Silence and rest/reflection patterns, and trust patterns all relate to this. --John

From Sheila Kim:
Commitment (e.g., committing to do something) and Decision-Making - for me, those are two very important aspects of groups, and quite often make-or-break indicators of an effective group, if the group is one that intends to act on something together. I wonder if commitment is covered by Taking Responsibility? Decision-making to me is not a pattern, it's one of several group needs that the pattern language is intended to address.--Tree
Problem Solving, particularly the pattern of bringing a group of people together to model a situation, explore alternatives, and identify actions to take as a result of the insights. The holistic model is referred to in Whole System in the Room but that’s more about who’s in the room as I read it as opposed to developing a common view of the system and then picking levers to pull... This could potentially be 2 patterns: Problem Exploration and Problem Solving. Problem-solving is another group need to address through all the patterns.--Tree
Amplify the Work – bringing the work of the group out into a larger organization or community. Could also be called something like Extending the Conversation. Is this beyond the scope of our PL, and/or for our purposes covered sufficiently by Whole System in the Room?--Tree
Restoring and Renewing the Group – i.e., keeping the group going over time, if that’s the group wants/needs, and as people flow into and out of it. Somewhere in the past year or so I read a beautiful discussion of this, maybe in Senge et al.’s Presence? --I wonder if this gets beyond our scope, we are more event focused, there are probably many patterns regarding organizational structure and management that we are not addressing.--Tree
Something like Making the Most of Everyone’s Abilities – that’s not the right wording, but what I mean here is a combination of being seen and also being able to contribute on an individual level with the result being that the work of the group could not have existed without that unique mix of people... Magic and Emergence kind of point to this but don’t really cover it. Having said that, I think it might be possible that these 3 are part of one pattern that hasn’t yet emerged. Is this adequately covered by Honour Each Person, Shared Leadership and Roles, Unity & Diversity, etc.? I'm not sure.--Tree
RENAMINGS?
Experts on Tap - Tree proposes reverting to former name "Experts on Tap, Not on Top"
Breaking Bread Together - Tree proposes renaming to "Breaking Bread"
Spirit - rename to Sacred?
Holding Space - John suggests rename to "Holding Space", and more clearly distinguish content from Hosting.
Trajectory - seems to be mostly about "Agenda building" or "Structuring an event", how about naming it something like that? - John
Fractal -> Fractal - John
Inquiry -> Inquiry - John
Not about You -> Not About You - Tom
MERGERS?
Combine together any of the "power" set: Power Shift, Shared Leadership and Roles, Guerrilla Facilitation, Experts on Tap. - Tree
Combine the "timespan" patterns: Preparedness, Developmental Time Frame, Trajectory - Tree
Combine any of the following into something like Creative Formatting: Mode Choice, Expressive Arts, Playfulness, and what about Improvise? - Tree
Do we definitely need separate patterns for all of the following "basic facilitation skills": Naming, Transparency, Witness with Compassion, Not about You, Translation, Reframing, Mirroring, Viewpoint Shift. - Tree
Translation and Reframing? -John
Any combining among Spirit, Magic, Emergence, Ritual, also Presence and Letting Go. - Tree. John suggests combining Spirit & Magic (-> Sacred or Spirit), and Presence & Letting Go (-> Presence).
Is Openness Toward Outcome unique? - Tree
Should Celebrate stand alone, or combine into Appreciation (perhaps rename to "Appreciation & Acknowledgement"), also bits of Common Ground, Breaking Bread Together. - Tree
Replace Rest and Reflection-Action Cycle with Rest and Reflection - idea from John, Ted, Tree
Emergence sounds a lot like Balance Structure and Flexibility. - John
Time Shift is a special case of Viewpoint Shift and may not need its own pattern. - John
PEGGY'S LIST OF POTENTIAL MERGERS:
With 59. Setting Intention: 52. Priority Focus, 53. Purpose - John suggests just merging Setting Intention and Purpose - setting intention is done initially, Priority Focus happens during an event.
With 49. Power of Place: 2. Aesthetics of Space, 25. Gaia
With 46. Openness toward Outcome: 78. Witness with Compassion
With 35. Hosting: 14. Holding Space
With 38. Iteration: 16. Developmental Time Frame
With 46. Openness Toward Outcome: 28. Good Faith Assumptions
Playfulness, Improvise, dive in
COMPOSTABLE?
Tree wonders about possibly moving any of the following to the potting shed:
