  • WORK PLAN FROM MARCH 2011

Category Chart:  Get this wrapped up.  Tree wants to revise the graphic with regard to colors, symbols, sequence, and so on.

Images:  Sue, Ted, Dave, and anyone else will find what they can between now and the next work session.  We will likely focus on this activity at the next work session as a primary task, attempting to have good enough images in place for all the patterns by the end of it.

Relationships:  John & Tree will review all of the primary relationships and bring any suggested changes to the next work session.  Vine has kindly agreed to copy data from the Google doc into the wiki, including entering the secondary relationships and how they are related as well as the comments for the primary relationships (plus deleting duplicates from secondary fields).  Sue will edit that text to remove people's names, make the sentences flow, and so on.  We are still determining final presentation form of that info, e.g. whether or not the patterns will be listed at the front of each paragraph with arrows, or embedded into the text of each one.

Heart Text Editing:  Tom will work on polishing the dozen patterns that have been added since the last round of major polishing in the fall.  Sue will review all the hearts and perhaps do some further polishing, and/or bring a few to the group's attention.  Note that Sue & Tree also still need to complete their earlier Edit lists.

Writing the Booklet:  Tree is the most likely person to draft opening sections on vision, what this is, etc.  Sue will do a first draft on how the cards can be used.  It would be great if these were done by the time the next work session starts, but it may not happen until later.

Researching Publication Options:  We will ask Dave if he is willing to take the lead on this research, probably instead of completing the book proposal.  That means researching what is involved in producing a high quality card deck and finding a company to do it, including dealing with printing accompanying booklets and likely a box.  We will all keep an eye out for graphic designer possibilities, noting that there are potentially 2 separate roles here:  an artist to design the uniform back of the cards, and a designer to do final layout for the fronts.  Tree will explore with Nuriya, Sue may ask her friend Cathy for initial sketch ideas.

Honour and Acknowledge:  We are grateful for the tremendous progress that has been made on this project and the sense that it is moving forward in a solid way.  We want to remember to take a few more moments at future gatherings to acknowledge and celebrate what we are accomplishing.

  • The core team has officially decided to focus on card deck publication as the next product, putting the cards in front of book publication.  I (Tree) am hoping we'll be ready to publish a card deck for real this spring.  In order to publish a card deck, the following needs to be accomplished (not necessarily in this order):

    1. Writing of explanatory material to accompany the publication (including an overview of what it is, invitation to get more involved online, and so on).
      a. Explanation of project:
      • overview of what it is and why
      • bit about our process in creating it
      b. Key to everything on the cards (name, number is alphabetical, image, heart text, categorization symbols, related patterns, etc.)
      c. Games or activities and anything that goes with them (instructions, stories, board, pieces)
      d. Map?
      e. Invitation to get more involved on the website
      f. How to buy more
    2. Final decisions on what cards to include in this deck publication:  did a pass on this at Bowen Jan. 2011, maybe one final pass before publication.
    3. Final editing of each card text.
    4. Acquisition of high quality images for all the cards, and final decisions about which to use.  John has been making great progress on improving the Image Library, with fields added indicating permission status, review, and more.
    5. Instructions for several games and activities (plus preparation of any materials needed for them, such as stories or a gameboard); see the Games List on the site for current info.
    6. Decision on one or more categorization schemes (either drawn from the existing list or newly created), if any are going to be included in this publication.
    7. Relationships among the patterns:  specifying more info on what kinds of relationships exist; editing the patterns for that; deciding how to represent the relationships in the card deck (map, small text around border of cards, or what else?).
    8. Professional-level graphic design and layout.
    9. Research the business side of publishing:  legalities, copyrights/lefts, attribution, permissions, revenue, what entity is responsible, marketing, packaging, is B-K interested in this product, how will distribution actually take place, etc.
    10. Website improvements for both internal (our development) and external (introducing the pattern language to the world) use.

Want to get involved with one or more of these areas?  Please get in touch with Tree or others for further connection.

  • Implement Decisions from Bowen Jan. 2011 "the 78" (now 82), and earlier:

    SUE

Edit heart of Distilling to include Synthesis & Summarizing ideas. - Sue

On Preparedness, replace “sensing problems just before they occur” with “anticipating problems that might occur.”  Includes Contracting, agenda-building, research.  Setting the stage, it’s about creation and not just avoidance.  Related pattern:  Invitation, Clear Channel.  Steal some content from Trajectory description to Preparedness description. - Sue

Merge content from Developmental Time Frame (which has been retired) to Trajectory. - Sue

Edit Taking Responsibility:  amplify follow-up. [or should that be more in Commitment? --John] - Sue

Edit these to potentially include concept of “transcend & include” (aka non-duality) : Emergence, Distilling, Embrace Dissonance and Difference. - Sue (or John?)

Reflection-Action Cycle: Sue to revise to 2-cycle instead of 4-cycle - Sue

Shared Leadership and Roles: develop former Rolling with Roles into broader pattern - Sue

Subgroup and Whole Group:  edit body to reflect new name - Sue

    TREE

On Holding Space, make sure that creating a container is still prominently discussed in the description. - Tree

Merge Reframing into Viewpoint Shift, making sure to bring those concepts/text over clearly to include in it. - Tree

Edit Magic to take a bunch from Spirit. - Tree

Edit Spirit to focus more on recognizing, accessing, deliberate invocation, tuning in, of larger whole, universe, transpersonal, higher realms, Source, creative power of the universe.  Why: for wisdom, wholeness, takes us beyond our limited perspective, energy source, inspiration. - Tree

Edit Power Shift to get more directly at issues of oppression (especially second half of heart). - Tree

Appropriate Boundaries: to be developed, expand beyond dealing with one person's upset, include cutting off lengthy speakers, keeping group on track, and more (uh-oh, this is going to affect relationships) - Tree

Tend Relationships: really needs revising - Tree

Witness with Compassion:  edit body to reflect new name - Tree

    DAVE

Edit Rest if needed to reflect new name (formerly Rest & Action in Balance). - Dave - DONE

Edit Mirroring & Witness with Compassion, Empathy:  not a new card, but review Mirroring and Witnessing to consider including the word “empathy” in heart(s)/descriptions. - Dave - DONE

√Boneyard:  Openness Toward Outcome  Merge into Emptying, Trust the Wisdom of the Group, Follow the Energy, Emergence.  Try to bring this phrase “openness toward outcome” into the heart of one of those four (most likely Emptying-Letting Go).

[Hehe - I edited it into Letting Go before seeing that it was already in Emergence, but decided that was okay. Then I saw that it's ben in Emergences heart since Daniel's version of 4/18/10 :-) --John]

    Rename:  Deliberate to Ruminate.

Add:  Listening:  Include outcome of people feeling heard, and paying attention to more than just verbal (include nonverbal).  Check carefully Mirroring, likely needs revisions in light of this, to avoid redundancy.

√Add:  Deliberate, as distinct from Reflection-Action Cycle, focusing on the latter half.  Thinking over, deliberating, considering in a measured and contemplative way.  Could be about process, but not necessarily.  (Tree stands aside.)

Add:  Distilling:  Related pattern is Divergence/Convergence (latter half).  Maybe later rename to shorter.  Making connections, threading, ref. Heather Gold, bringing awareness to group, distill to simplest, essential characterization.  Note relation to Common Ground.  Rename:  Distillation? [I like that. --John]

√?Add:  Go Meta (already added as Go Meta):  Making process into the content, process becomes explicit topic of conversation.  Cultural dynamics, broader context.  Analysis of how things are playing out here in the room right now.  Higher, more abstract level of analysis.  Jump up.  Possibly rename later.  Related pattern:  Naming.  Maybe refer to Douglas Hofstedter.

√?Add:  Letting Go (already added as Letting Go).  Merge Clear Channel into this pattern.  Bring in some what Larry Pennings said (on to be discussed, Bowen Jan. 2011) along these lines.

Add: Honour Each Person.  We’d like to maybe find a better name for this.  Honour the individual.  Each person to be fully respected as an integral being, more than just their function in the group.  Tolerance, accommodation, embracing.

Add:  Commitment. Becoming aware of them, following through, taking the step to make it explicit what we are doing now and in the future, let it sink in.  Include something on implicit and explicit, when each happens or is important.  Results in energetic release.  Might include some stepping stones along the way.  Related pattern:  Taking Responsibility.

Add:  Moving toward Alignment:  How you get there, activity toward, arriving at decisions, could include stepping stones along the way, or strategizing, need to know what threshold is.  Related patterns:  Priority Focus, Divergence & Convergence.

Add:  Inform the Group Mind.  Gathering the sense of the group, informing the group mind, accurate, compelling information being shared, gathering facts.  Related Patterns:  Feedback, Harvesting, Preparedness, Expert as Resource.

Rename Questioning to Inquiry:  , include aspect of having a curious attitude

Rename Rest and Action in Balance to Rest.  Edit if needed to reflect new name.

Rename Margins vs. Centre to Valuing the Margins.  Acknowledge edges.

√Rename Expert as Resource to Experts on Tap.

√Rename Eating Together to Breaking Bread Together.

√Rename Depersonalization to Not About You.

    √Rename Hologram to Fractal.

Rename Creating a Container, Holding the Space to Holding Space

    √Rename Improvisation as Improvisational Skill.

Rename Witnessing without Judgement to Witnessing with Compassion, √including Empathy in the heart of it.

    √Rename:  Action-Reflection Cycle becomes Reflection-Action Cycle.

    √Rename Anticipation to Preparedness.
